What's going on?Fortunately, a heart attack is unlikely at this age! But there are a number of other possible causes for chest pain in children. They may also be strained and sore because of a hacking cough. Children's Symptom Guide Is it serious? Find out fast Asthma. If asthma is the culprit, your child may also have a severe cough and trouble breathing. Her symptoms may be worse at night, early in the morning, and after running or crying. Pneumonia. If the pain is associated with a persistent cough, your toddler may have pneumonia. Other symptoms of pneumonia include a cold that seems to be getting worse; fast, labored breathing and perhaps wheezing; fever; chills; decreased appetite; stomach pain; vomiting; fussiness; and headache. Swallowing a foreign body. Call 911 if your toddler is having trouble breathing. If a child swallows something that she shouldn't, like a toy or a penny, she may feel chest pain from the irritation in her esophagus as it goes down. She may also have coughing, wheezing, or drooling. Gastroesophageal reflux disorder. If your toddler complains of pain in her chest after eating, it may be the result of regurgitated stomach acid. This is more likely to happen if she's been lying down. She may also have a sore throat, a sour taste in her mouth, or vomiting.
